There was plenty of speculation linking Arsenal with a move for former Lille star Dimitri Payet last summer before the 26-year-old winger committed to a move to Marseille.
Arsene Wenger saw something he was unconvinced by which paved the way for Marseille to complete a €9 million Euro deal (plus add ons) for the Frenchman and it looks like a good decision by the Arsenal boss.
French media source Le 10 Sport has gone with a story on their website which uses Payet and mediocre in the same headline, as the site rips into the player for below par and inconsistent performances this season.
“Payet is on the bench, this is a strong sign. He arrived as a €10 million star and a big salary – the only thing he’s regular in is mediocrity,” reads part of the Le 10 Sport report.
He’s featured in 18 Ligue One games so far this season scoring four goals and providing two assists, but on 13 occasions he’s been subbed off, appearing as a sub once which means he’s completed 90 minutes just four times.
Considering how well Arsenal have played this season, it further enhances the idea that it was a good choice by Wenger to overlook him.
Arsenal are fortunate to have so many good midfield options, with players who are versatile in a number of positions across the middle and in the wide areas of the team which helps to compensate for the absence of Theo Walcott.
However, recent reports of a bid for Real Sociedad star Antoine Griezmann suggest that Wenger is still looking to add a player out wide but don’t expect the Gunners to be linked with Payet again this month or in the summer.
His impact in France hasn’t gone down positively and there’s every indication from this French source that Arsenal dodged a few problems by not signing him.
