Today is Marc Bartra’s birthday. It is also the day he announced he had agreed a new four-year deal with Barcelona, putting an end to any chance Tottenham Hotspur or Liverpool had of signing him.
Tottenham were linked with Bartra in August by The Mail, while reports in Spain linked Liverpool just last month.
The 23-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer, and there had been some doubts as to whether he would be offered a new one.
But given that he is now free to discuss a possible move, and following reports that he has offers from clubs in both England and Germany, Barcelona have now made their move.
Spanish broadsheet El Confidencial reports that Bartra tweeted the following to announce the news:
“What a special day! The best birthday, renewal for 4 years with the club of my life. Always Barca.”
Reports had always claimed the defender wanted to remain at the Nou Camp, but with his contract approaching its end, stories began to circulate linking him with a move to the Premier League.
But they can now be put well and truly to bed, as yet another Barca starlet linked with England will instead be remaining in La Liga.
Pen has not yet been put to paper, but Sky Sports published a statement from the Spanish champions which revealed the deal would run until 2017, and would contain a release-clause of €25million.
Who should Liverpool and Tottenham now turn their attention to?
