Hazard v Januzaj is Master v Apprentice...or is it?

Eden Hazard Dribbling

Tomorrow Eden Hazard's Chelsea come face-to-face with Adnan Januzaj's Manchester United, but how far apart are the two players on current performance?

In an alternate universe, Eden Hazard may have chosen Manchester United over Chelsea, but in this one he is starring for Jose Mourinho's men, arguably the only player who can get close to Luis Suarez on current form.

Tomorrow afternoon, the majestic Belgian will be hoping to get one over on United again, and Mourinho's home record against the Red Devils suggests that is likely.  But while David Moyes will be without Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney through injury, he will have one creative spark to call on - a teenager who was not supposed to be this good this soon, and yet one who has outshone many of his United teammates so far this season.

With Adnan Januzaj coming up against Hazard, I wondered if it was a case of master versus apprentice.  After all, they are both the current creative hub of their team, but the Chelsea man has considerably more experience than the United player five years his junior.

But what do the stats say?

The table below shows that Hazard has scored three times as many goals as Januzaj, and has more than double the amount of assists.  In fact he outdoes him in every category, but given that he has played almost twice as many minutes as the teenager, it is no surprise.

PlayerGoals AssistAccurate PassAccurate CrossWon ContestWas FouledMins
Eden Hazard 9 5 749 9 76 59 1,746
Adnan Januzaj 3 2 281 7 29 42 958

So let's take a look at how the players perform on average per match.

As we know, Hazard outdoes Januzaj in goals and assists, but per match, the latter has provided more accurate crosses and has drawn more fouls than his older counterpart.

PlayerGoals  Assist Accurate PassAccurate CrossWon ContestWas FouledMins
Eden Hazard 0.43 0.24 35.67 0.43 3.62 2.81 1,746
Adnan Januzaj 0.20 0.13 18.73 0.47 1.93 2.80 958

Finally I wanted to look at a different range of statistics, because in a sense some of those above are reliant on teammates.  For example, it is one thing setting up a chance and another for that chance to end up in the net. But in essence all Januzaj can do is put the chance on the plate; it is up to a teammate whether it is gobbled up or brushed aside.

So, as you can see from the statistics below, Januzaj has delivered more crosses per game, had more shots on goal, has been fouled more in the final third and has attempted more through-balls.

So while Hazard's experience is such that for now he remains ahead of a young man who may one day be playing alongside him for Belgium; there are areas in which Januzaj outdoes him.  Just imagine how the United man will do when Moyes brings in some new quality to play alongside him.

Eden Hazard 1.95 1.86 2.38 6.10 1.05 0.29

Who would you rather have in your team, Hazard or Januzaj? And how do you think the two players will perform tomorrow?
