United to launch a new Bilbao bid; not for Herrera; Arsenal also keen

Athletic Bilbao

The Premier League champions are believed to be interested in defender Aymeric Laporte, who is impressing in Spain.

Manchester United tried to sign Athletic Bilbao star Ander Herrera last summer, but came up short in the hunt for the creative midfielder.

If reports in Spain are to be believed, David Moyes is ready to raid San Mames once more – but this time for defender Aymeric Laporte.

AS claim that both United and Arsenal have been monitoring the progress of the versatile defender, who can either play in centre or left-back.

Laporte is only the second French player to play for the Basque club after Bixente Lizarazu, and has caught the eye with some commanding performances.

The 19-year-old is a regular for France under-21’s, and was said to be attracting interest from Barcelona. As a result, Bilbao convinced the youngster to sign a new contract, keeping him at the club until 2018.

The deal is believed to have a buy-out clause of €36million; a considerable amount for a teenager.

United’s supposed interest in Laporte is understandable given that he can play at either centre-half or left-back, where the Old Trafford outfit are seeking reinforcements.

Should United move for Laporte?
