It looked set to be one of the biggest transfers of the month in Serie A. Fredy Guarin had been linked with a move away from the San Siro numerous times. Now he looked set to join rivals Juventus with their striker Mirko Vucinic moving the other way.
On Tuesday Guarin had agreed terms with Juve' and Vucinic had passed his medical at Inter. A section of Inter's fans were not happy with the proposed deal though and demonstrated outside the club's headquarters on Tuesday. Inter Milan's club president Erick Thohir then called off the deal.
On the club's official website Thohir explained why he pulled out of the deal. "After speaking to my closest aides and exchanging views with Massimo Moratti and his son Angelomario this morning, I decided not to continue negotiations with Juventus. I felt it was not possible to reach an agreement on a deal in which the opinions of the two parties differed and which did not offer a clear financial or technical benefit to the club."
It is not known whether any money would have been involved on top of the player's exchanging clubs but The Mirror had reported Juventus would be parting with £1.5 million. With Inter fans demonstrating it shows how highly they regard Fredy Guarin and did not want to see him leave in those circumstances. The Colombian has been one of the standout performers for the club this season, and it wouldn't make sense for them to sell him onto to another competitor in Serie A.
Whilst Inter are 23 points behind Juventus in Serie A and a Champions League place looks like their best outcome for this season, it would not be a sensible move in the long-term to see Guarin go.
A move for Vucinic alone could still happen though, with Rodrigo Palacio currently the only Inter player to get into double figures in the scoring charts. Vucinic does look set to leave Turin with Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente ahead of him in the pecking order. Arsenal were linked with taking him on loan last week, and could reignite their interest now the swap deal has fallen through.
Will Arsenal now move for Mirko Vucinic?
