Manchester United linked defender target 'interested in Fiorentina move'

Mateo Musacchio’s agent has voiced his client’s interest in joining Fiorentina.

The 23-year-old defender has drawn considerable attention from around Europe this term – with both Manchester clubs, Chelsea and Barcelona reportedly keen on his services.

A product of the River Plate academy in his native Argentina, the centre-back moved to Villareal in August 2009 – cementing his place in the starting eleven over the following years.

Musacchio has been ever-present for the Yellow Submarine in their return to the Spanish top flight this term – playing every minute available in La Liga as the Valencian club sit within striking distance of Champions League qualification.

Club president Fernando Roig is understood to be hesitant to sell off his side’s prize asset – who is believed to have a massive €50m release clause in his current contract.

Confusion has abounded about the length of the defender’s current deal at El Madrigal – his agent having previously claimed it expired in June, only to later remark terms wouldn’t run out until 2018.

And Musacchio’s representative has reiterated the latter length, though at the same time admitted a move to rumoured suitors would be welcome – and at a substantially decreased price.

“The player would be interested in the Fiorentina project, but we are waiting for a concrete proposal from the Viola,” Marcelo Lombilla said to Lady Radio.

“The player’s contract expires in 2018 and his market value is between €18m and €20m.

“He’s very young, so for now a transfer would be difficult, but in June we’ll see.

“He’d like to be reunited with Gonzalo Rodriguez and Borja Valero – Fiorentina are growing and I believe he’d work well with [coach Vincenzo] Montella.”

With three former team-mates at the Stadio Artemio Franchi – Giuseppe Rossi rounding out the trio – Musacchio would have plenty of voices to convince him of a Tuscan switch.

Fiorentina have shown a great deal of ambition on the transfer market over the past two campaigns – their greatest exploit coming in signing Mario Gomez from Bayern Munich.

As such, it’s certainly not past the Viola to make a play for the Argentine – especially as his cost is seemingly now palatable and Lombilla is keen on the club.

This is not to rule out the influence of Roig – who will certainly have his say – or financially flush Premier League outfits, however, as nothing is set in stone.

But Fiorentina do at least appear to have a leg up on the competition for Musacchio heading into the summer – and should they press this advantage home, just might be able to pull off another coup to strengthen a side already of considerable talent.

Will Musacchio snub the Premier League in favour of Serie A this summer?
