Cristiano Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes claims it's 'almost certain' the Ballon d'Or winner will return to Real Madrid.
Manchester United fans dreamed all summer long of former hero Cristiano Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford.
In the end his Champions League visit months earlier was as close as they got.
Ronaldo's future was in doubt at the club with his contract renewal remaining unsigned and present deal expiring in 2015.
The Sun reported in June that United were convinced they could take advantage of the uncertainty to re-sign their former icon.
Several sources even claimed a delegation from United even met with Ronaldo's representatives in the same month to discuss a return.
Yet in July Ronaldo signed a new deal to tie him down at Real Madrid until 2018, ending any hopes United had of landing the player they sold for £80 million.
Now Cristiano Ronaldo's agent has moved to end any hopes United may have of re-signing the Ballon d'Or winner after his new contract runs down, hinting he may never play for another side again.
The influential Jorge Mendes told Marca: "He'll retire at Real, almost certainly. I think that he'll end up beating all of the club's records."
He even went onto state Ronaldo would be remembered as an all-time great: "He'll be considered the best footballer in history. In fact, for me he already is. I've not seen another player like him in my life. And I'll tell you something else: other professional players share the same opinion: he's the best player in the world."
One of the key factors linking Ronaldo with a United return originally was Sir Alex Ferguson, and now he has retired, the prospects of him ever coming back look slimmer.
Even thought it was a faint hope the former number seven may come back to Manchester when his contract expires and he will be 33, seemingly the chances are slim to none.
Are you still optimistic Ronaldo will wear a United shirt again?
