The Ukrainian champions have confirmed the tragic news that their Brazilian striker Maicon has passed away in a car accident.

Shakhtar have reported that their 25-year-old Brazilian forward Maicon has died in a crash in Donetsk.

It is uncertain when the accident took place, with the club making the news public in the early hours of 8 February on both their official website and their Twitter account.

On their website Shakhtar gave the following press statement: "FC Shakhtar regretfully informs that on 8 February 2014 the life of a footballer Maicon Pereira de Oliveira tragically ended. He died in a car crash in Donetsk.

"He was a talented footballer, open and friendly guy. Maicon loved life and knew how to make it positive and bright. Tragic, untimely and absurd death took away a wonderful person from our ranks. Maicon was only 25 years old.

"It is a terrible bereavement for each of us. FC Shakhtar expresses condolences and sympathy to Maicon’s family and friends. May he rest in peace..."

Maicon had come to Ukraine in 2009, signing for Volyn Lutsk, and enjoyed excellent form there that eventually saw him transferred to Donetsk in 2012.

His time at Shakhtar was less successful, and he scored one goal in six appearances for a team that have historically had several Brazilians on their playing staff. Maicon had made two appearances for Shakhtar this season, as well as enjoying a loan spell at fellow Premier League side Illichivets Mariupol where he scored three goals in 10 games.

Premier League Brazilians Willian and Fernandinho, turned out for Donetsk and would have been teammates of Maicon. The Chelsea winger tweeted his sadness on the tragedy.
