Forget Cerci, here's the Italian Man United should sign

Manchester United have been linked with Alessio Cerci and Domenico Berardi, but there's another Serie A star who they should look to.

Over the last few months, Manchester United have been frequently linked with a number of Serie A targets, including Arturo Vidal, Claudio Marchisio, Alessio Cerci and Domenico Berardi, but there's another name that should be added to the list.

It has been a breakthrough season for Ciro Immobile, who is setting Serie A alight with a steady flow of goals for Torino.

Immobile is in free-scoring form and his header against Bologna at the weekend was his seventh goal in seven league games.

In total, the 23-year-old has 12 goals to his name, on a par with Berardi and bettered only by Carlos Tevez and Giuseppe Rossi, and he has been inspirational in driving Torino up the table.

Immobile's recent success should come as little surprise. Since his heroics in the 2009 Viareggio Cup, the Neapolitan marksman has been tipped for the top.

While Immobile's first senior appearance for Juventus was brief, it was an auspicious omen that he replaced Alessandro Del Piero in the 89th minute against Bologna in 2009.

Like many Juventus-owned starlets, Immobile has spent a considerable amount of time on loan, playing for Siena, Grosseto and Pescara - where he was lethal - before joining Genoa where he was co-owned before Juventus bought the Grifoni out and signed a co-ownership agreement with city rivals Torino instead.

This season has finally seen Immobile show the extent of his talent. At the start of the campaign, Juventus were considering selling the rest of his rights to Torino, now it seems the two Turin sides will fight to own him outright.

Juventus' financial resources mean they can sweep aside the Granata, but is there room in their squad for yet another striker?

If Immobile continues his current form, he will be the top Italian scorer this season and can expect offers from all over Europe.

If rumours suggesting that Manchester United are preparing a swoop for Berardi are true then maybe the Red Devils will opt for Immobile instead - he's a proven poacher with an eye for goal but he's also older and more experienced, so they're less likely to be left with a Federico Macheda scenario.
