Chelsea legend praises former interim boss Benitez - 'Extraordinary season'

Napoli

Gianfranco Zola believes Rafa Benitez is having an excellent season at Napoli.

Despite what eventually became a rather successful half campaign for Rafa Benitez at Chelsea - it is probably fair to say that he was never exactly the most popular manager in the clubs history.

The Spaniard was almost immediately disliked by the Chelsea fans - as his past discretions were not forgiven by the clubs fans.

It was clearly something the management at the club also picked up on - they made it clear from the start that his appointment was of the ‘interim’ nature, which angered the boss.

He went on to help them qualify for the Champions League and took them to Europa League glory - but when the end of the season rocked around he was never going to stay at Stamford Bridge.

He moved on, taking the reins at the recently vacated position at the Stadio San Paulo for Napoli - and he then proceeded to have a very busy summer in the transfer market.

Napoli have since fallen from a difficult Champions League group but are in the Coppa Italia final after blowing away Roma in the second leg of their semi-final match.

They sit third in Serie A - and are battling Roma for second placed in the league, which looks like Juventus’ to lose.

And one former Chelsea legend has been signing his praises.

Essentially what Gianfranco Zola says goes at Stamford Bridge. The Italian maestro - who spent seven unforgettable years in South West London - also spent four years at Napoli between 1989 and 1993.

The former Watford boss has been speaking to media in Naples - and had this to say about Benitez’s season so far:

"Napoli are having an extraordinary season along with Roma, Juve's impressive the way they are obscuring the pursuers. The Blues have played fantastic Champions and this should not be forgotten. Benitez's exit is undeservedly in a group of death.”

We are however not sure that many a Chelsea fan would agree with Zola’s assessment of the unpopular Spaniard.

How impressed have you been with Benitez at Napoli?
