Pellegrini should face huge ban - just like Mourinho

Manuel Pellegrini

Manuel Pellegrini should be banned for his post-match Barcelona rant.

If Jose Mourinho had done it, the world would be spinning out of orbit - and the press would have a field day.

Not that Pellegrini hasn't received his fair share of criticism for his petulant response to Manchester City's 2-0 defeat to Barca, though it remains to be seen how Uefa will react.

Mourinho received a five-match ban (later reduced to three) when he brought the referee's impartiality into question and the 60-year-old has now done exactly the same thing.

"The referee decided the game," Pellegrini told reporters after the match. "He decided the game because before the penalty, it was a foul on [Jesus] Navas but from the beginning I could see the ref was not impartial to both teams.

"So he decided the game with the foul he didn't whistle against and after the penalty of [Martin] Demichelis - it was not a penalty, it was outside the box.

"I think it was not a good idea to put a referee from Sweden in [charge] of such an important match ... I think maybe that kind of game needs a referee with more experience."

So Pellegrini, quite clearly, has brought into question the referee's officiating abilities - and his objectivity. If that's not worth a huge ban, Uefa may as well dissolve and let managers referee their own games.

The Chilean has built up an image as a respected, intellectual member of the football management profession - but many have failed to notice his poor responses when under pressure.

When Man City lost to Chelsea in the Premier League, for instance, Pellegrini refused to shake Mourinho's hand and stormed down the dugout. Now, the City boss has gone one further with last night's rant.

A heavy ban would make him think twice about such behaviour in the future. And it's a ban that must be enforced: we can't have one rule for Mourinho and a different one for others.

What did you make of Pellegrini's post-match rant at the referee?
