The legendary Argentine is being rumoured with a return to the beautiful game – for fifth-tier side Deportivo Riestra.

When talking about the best players to ever play football, Diego Maradona’s name is a mainstay in conversations.

Through his career he dazzled spectators with his individual brilliance, with the attacking midfielder shining for Boca Junior, Barcelona, Napoli and Argentina in particular.

However, after a few botched attempts at management, Maradona seems ready to put his boots back on.

Aged 53, the outspoken star joined Argentinian fifth-tier side Deportivo Riestra as a “spiritual coach” last year, but newspaper Ole have revealed that he is ready to play for the side also.

It is suggested that Maradona’s paperwork to play has been lodged with the Argentinian FA and that he could well be on the pitch before long.

His last competitive fixture came all the way back in 1998, when he played for Boca Juniors 16 years ago.
