Which ex-Arsenal wonderkid is waiting for his chance at Monaco?

Monte Carlo

Nacer Barazite formerly of Derby County and Arsenal is waiting for an opportunity in Ligue 1.

A young talent discarded by Arsenal with barely playing a game for the Gunners is waiting patiently for another chance with Ligue 1 giants Monaco.

Nacer Barazite was a member of Arsenal's academy between 2007 and 2011, eventually leading to sign for Austria Wien for £1.3 million.

The former Dutch under-21 international enjoyed a season on loan with Derby County while at Arsenal as well as a spell with Vitesse, but now it has been injuries holding him back.

Barazite impressed in Austria, so much so that AS Monaco were able to lure him to the principality two January's ago for £4 million.

His time there never really took off, and the former Gunner found himself loaned back to Wien.

This season it has been even tougher for him, with Monaco promoted to Ligue 1 and superstars of the likes of Falcao to compete with.

Add to that the fact that he has been injured, the 23-year-old talent has yet to play a single minute for the club this season.

He waits patiently though. ESPN reported two months ago that Barazite was close to overcoming a knee injury suffered in pre-season and would be available for selection.

He still waits for his big chance to come calling again. His previous record of one goal in 12 games for Monaco means they are not relying on him in any way to take them forward, but his record of 19 goals in 33 for Austria Wien in 2012 is a glimpse to the talent he possesses.

With a contract at Monaco until 2016, it would still be a surprise if he does not move on for a new challenge and chance to play regularly in the summer should his prospects not improve.

Memories at the Emirates for Arsenal fans of Barazite will be slim. He played just the one game for them, as a substitute for a 21 minute spell in a League Cup win over West Brom in 2009, in which Carlos Vela and Sanchez Watt scored the goals.

The winger, who has converted to a forward since his time at Wien, had a chance to go and play on loan at Utrecht in late January, but turned down the option of a move to fight for his place in Ligue 1. It's a questionable position as he has not even been granted a squad number for this present season.

So far it hasn't panned out for him, with Monaco fighting for Champions League places and with numerous attacking options at their disposal even despite Falcao's injury it appears he will have to keep on waiting, but if he does get a chance he could just become their secret weapon, and failing that - will have to move on and relaunch his career in the summer.
