Chelsea fans react on Twitter to Eto'o performance v Tottenham

Samuel Eto'o

Scored a goal, won a penalty, got a man sent off and took the micky out of Jose Mourinho - great game all round for Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o.

Chelsea have a seven point lead at the top of the table after an excellent performance against Tottenham Hotspur - and a little bit of help from some quite woeful defensive decisions by the Spurs defence (and perhaps referee Michael Oliver).

The interesting point about the result was the player who inspired it was not meant to even be playing.

Fernando Torres was all set to start the game - but pulled out of the game with a groin strain picked up in the pre-match warm up.

So Samuel Eto’o was given the nod - and boy did he take his chance with both hands.

He scored the opener, earned a red-card and penalty for the second and pulled off perhaps the best celebration of the season.

He was a willing runner throughout the game - running in behind Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul seemingly at will, and he certainly looks back to his best.

No matter how old he is, 32, 33, 35 or 60, he is seemingly approaching something similar to his best and even Jose Mourinho saw the funny side of his celebration - mocking the managers off the cuff comments over his age:

“I told him before the game, 'you are going to score for sure' because he was supposed to be on the bench. Fernando was supposed to start the game. A couple of minutes before the game, he was not able to play and I thought 'this is your destiny'. I didn't suggest it [the celebration], but I knew it [was coming]. The best way to defuse a situation is to make fun. Some newspapers did great with photoshop. Now they don't need photoshop, they have the real thing."

Eto’o had his critics at the start of his Chelsea career as his time in Russia seemed to have sapped him of his Barcelona and Inter Milan era qualities.

Today saw him perhaps put in his best performance in Chelsea blue yet - and the fans were clearly very happy with his efforts this evening.

Here is some reaction from Twitter
