‘Who’s to say they haven’t got three or four replacements lined up?’ says ex-player of Johnson’s future

Glen Johnson

Former Liverpool player Mark Lawrenson has been writing about the future of Glen Johnson.

Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson’s current deal runs until the summer of 2015. And for now, what happens after that remains a mystery.

The 29-year-old has previously expressed his desire to remain at Anfield, and yet has admitted that talks over an extension have yet to take place.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo last week, the England international said, “I’ve loved every minute of the five years I’ve been here and I’d love to stay, but really the only truth in it is that I’ve not been offered a new contract on any level.”

With the emergence of Jon Flanagan, it will be interesting to see who is the Reds’ first-choice right-back next season and beyond. And now former Liverpool player Mark Lawrenson has had his say on the Johnson situation.

Writing for the Echo, Lawrenson said, “Given the improvement in the running of the club, particularly in terms of recruitment, I’d imagine Liverpool have a plan A, B and C regarding Johnson.

“My gut feeling is they will offer Johnson a new deal with reduced terms and ask him to take it or leave it.

“Yes, I understand that it will cost money to replace Johnson, an experienced England international. But who is to say Liverpool haven’t already got three or four players lined up as a replacement?”

It is an interesting analysis of the situation, and one that makes sense given the development of the young players at Brendan Rodgers’ disposal and the probability that players will now see Anfield as one of the very best options given their resurgence and likely place in next season’s Champions League.

But given Johnson’s previous expression of love for the club and the time he has spent there, it seems unlikely he will reject the terms offered to him...provided they come, of course.

Do you think Johnson will sign a new deal? And who would you prefer to see at right-back - Johnson or Flanagan?
