With Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen stating recently that he would assess his future in the summer dependent on where the club finishes this term, the media have been speculating who could replace the Belgian in North London.
The latest player to be linked with a switch to White Hart Lane is Valencia’s Jeremy Mathieu.
The Daily Star claim that Tim Sherwood’s men will make an approach for the France international in the summer if Vertonghen makes his desire to leave the club known.
Mathieu is predominantly a left-back, an area in which Spurs have had issues this season, but can also play in the centre of defence too.
The 30-year-old has been capped by his country on two occasions and has been with Valencia since 2009.
Mathieu’s current contract does not expire until 2017, with a reported £17 million release clause embedded in his deal at the Mestalla.
However, with Valencia well-publicised financial problems, the report states that Daniel Levy would look to barter a more-affordable deal.
Is Mathieu someone Spurs should be targeting?
