Arsenal's German contingent have a point to prove in Munich

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is backing his German players to shine against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The chances of Arsenal progressing in the competition tonight are slim at best, but Arsenal manager Wenger seems quietly determined all the same.

After a difficult few weeks, Arsenal’s 4-1 FA Cup victory over Everton now makes them favourites for the tournament, and there now looks to be a realistic opportunity for the club to bag a first trophy since 2005. But before possible FA Cup glory, the North Londoners face off Tuesday evening against the current Champions League holders with a spring in their step.

Winning in Germany isn’t out of the question for Arsenal, of course - as last year’s victory in Munich and this season’s victory in Dortmund prove it can be done. Arsenal's German continent of Mesut Ozil, Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker, however, all have a point to prove - after Arsenal put in a largely disappointing first-leg performance.

Wenger is quoted in the Daily Mirror saying: 'Ozil started quite well in the first leg. But he was affected by the fact he missed the penalty. It affected his performance because he felt he let the team down

'Since then he has recovered. He had a great performance on Saturday, and I’m confident he will have a good game.

Lukas Podolski is in very good form. He was injured for a long time, but he’s now come back and in the run-in - in the last 10 games - he can play a very important role.

'And Per Mertesacker, everybody knows in Germany and England how good he is. He has become a very good player'.

Win, lose or draw – Wenger will at least expect his Arsenal players to take the game to Bayern, and with German national team coach Jogi Loew expected to be in attendance, there's a lot at stake for Arsenal’s German players as we approach this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Can Arsenal’s German players produce their best tonight ?
