VIDEO: Ex-Liverpool star's win in Turkey abandoned as players targeted with bricks and flares

Dirk Kuyt

Ex-Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt and his teammates were bombarded with bricks and other objects during Fenerbache’s away trip to Trabzonspor.

With the game approaching half-time, Fenerbache were beating rivals Trabzonspor 1-0 when the referee called the game to a halt.

It was a good decision by the officials, as the players’ safety had been scrutinised after a host of objects – including bricks and flares – had been thrown onto the pitch.

Kuyt’s side went into the match leading the Turkish Super League – three points clear of Roberto Mancini’s Galatasary. Having lost just one home game all season, Trabzonspor were always going to be tricky opposition.

But after Fener took an early lead, mayhem ensued for reasons still unclear. The home fans were out of control, and after a small object struck striker Emmanuel Emenike, goalkeeper Volkan Demirel became the target of a flare which missed him by a matter of centimetres - an action which caused a number of players to plead with the referee to abandon the game.

Turkey has always had a violent and intimidating atmosphere at a number of their football stadiums, and 33-year-old Dirk Kuyt must sometimes be wondering what he has let himself in for.
