Third-person MOBA, SMITE, now officially released!

SMITE 1

A new perspective on the MOBA genre, with powerful gods as playable characters.

Hi-Rez Studios have released their free-to-play MOBA, SMITE, in North America and Europe. The game has amassed over 3 million registered users during it’s Open Beta phase, and to celebrate the games official release they have posted a cinematic trailer for us to gawk at.

To celebrate the game’s launch, Hi-Rez Studios are holding a Launch Tournament with a prize pool of $200,000! The tournament will take place on Friday 28 March through to Sunday 30 March 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia USA. Half of the prize pool has been contributed by the game’s community, via exclusive in-game merchandise purchases. Hosted in front of a live audience, the competition includes the top four teams in Europe, as well as the top four teams in North America, that have qualified from the SMITE Weekly Tournament Series, which began on 4 January 2014. The event will be available to watch via live-stream over on Twitch.

A third-person take on the MOBA genre, SMITE sees you taking on the role of gods from various mythos. Currently there are 51 gods to choose from, including Zeus, Anubis, and Kali, from Greek, Egyptian, and Hindu mythology respectively. Using the WASD keys to move, and your mouse to aim, you will be present in intense PVP combat in various game modes – including the 5 vs 5, three-lane, conquest mode.

I recently played SMITE with some friends over the weekend, and I have to say it’s great fun. Definitely a welcome break from the intense strategy of my usual Dota 2 sessions – not say Dota 2 isn’t fun, but SMITE is an interesting spin on the increasingly-popular genre. And being able to play as the almighty Thor is a definite plus too!

Take a gander at the cinematic trailer below!
