Sporting Lisbon have a habit of bringing through impressive wingers, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani two such examples who have gone on to achieve differing levels of success. And now another Portuguese starlet is making headlines in his homeland in the form of Carlos Mane.
The 20-year-old right-winger may not be generating as many column-inches as his teammate William Carvalho (and rightly so given the midfielder’s outstanding performances), but Mane is proving to be another young star in the making.
With a reported €45million release-clause he will not come cheap, and given his age there is no reason why he should not remain at Sporting for a while to come. But following reports suggesting Manchester United were keeping a close eye on him, now they may have rivals for his signature.
Portuguese newspaper O Jogo has picked up on reports in Italy that claim Juventus are interested in Mane, a story which comes just days after the Serie A champions were linked with another United target – William.
Mane has made 13 Primeira Liga appearances so far this season, scoring two goals. But it is his speed and directness that has really impressed and he can add some much-needed forward-drive to United’s wide areas.
Having just been named in Gazzetta dello Sport’s Top 60 young players in world football, it appears Italy are beginning to notice what Portugal has known for a while.
But will anyone be prepared to pay that release-clause? Or will Sporting accept a lower fee when the time does come for him to depart?
Is Mane a transfer target United should pursue?
