Crystal Palace man does what only Luis Suarez had managed this season

Selhurst Park - Crystal Palace - 23/02/2014

Crystal Palace's Jason Puncheon scored twice in the Eagles' 3-0 victory over Cardiff City, but he also matched an achievement of the Liverpool striker.

Jason Puncheon is enjoying a terrific spell of football under Tony Pulis. And yet the Crystal Palace winger was suffering a barren spell in front of goal...until Saturday that is.

Puncheon scored twice in the Eagles' 3-0 victory over Cardiff City - a match that could have huge ramifications for both clubs come the season's end.  But while the 27-year-old's magnificent late strike stole the headlines, it was something else that caught my eye.

Puncheon had six on-target scoring attempts on Saturday - more than any other player in the top flight.  In fact, only Newcastle United's Papiss Cisse and Chelsea's Frank Lampard got close to that figure, with four and three attempts respectively.

So in short, Puncheon had at least four more shots on target than all but two of those involved in Premier League action this weekend.

Jason Puncheon 6 90

But just how impressive a stat is that?  How often do players get six or more attempts on target in a single game?

As you can see below, no player has managed more on-target attempts than six in the league this season. And in fact Puncheon is one of only two players to achieve that feat - the other being Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who has done so twice this campaign.

And only four other players have managed five attempts on target in a single match - Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling, Romelu Lukaku and Jay Rodriguez.

PlayerMatchMatchdayOn-target Scoring AttemptsMins
Jason Puncheon Cardiff vs Crystal Palace 33 6 90
Luis Suarez Liverpool vs Norwich 14 6 89
Luis Suarez Spurs vs Liverpool 16 6 90
Sergio Agüero Man City vs Spurs 12 5 69
Sergio Agüero West Ham vs Man City 08 5 82
Romelu Lukaku Everton vs Liverpool 12 5 90
Jay Rodriguez Southampton vs Newcastle 32 5 90
Raheem Sterling Liverpool vs Arsenal 25 5 90
Luis Suarez Liverpool vs West Brom 09 5 89
Luis Suarez Cardiff vs Liverpool 31 5 90
Luis Suarez Liverpool vs West Ham 15 5 90

So Puncheon is in fine company, and has showed that if you are not afraid to have a go at goal, sometimes you net a beauty.

Next up for Palace is Aston Villa on Saturday, while Liverpool face Manchester City.  The race is on to see if either player can make it seven on-target shots in a single game.  Although both will no doubt settle for grabbing the winner.

How impressed have you been with Puncheon this season?
