Out of nowhere, Chelsea and United linked with €30m 23-year-old

Benfica striker Rodrigo has been linked with Chelsea and Manchester United, having previously been tipped for a move to either Liverpool or Arsenal.

Back in January, Arsenal were heavily linked with Benfica striker Rodrigo.

The player was enjoying an impressive scoring spell and, despite his €30million release-clause, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was said to be pondering a move for the Spaniard.

Of course nothing came of that rumour, although the 23-year-old’s economic rights were sold for that amount, meaning that although he remains in Portugal for now, he looks set for a summer move once a buyer can be found.

There were suggestions that Arsenal would make a move this summer, especially given their failure to capitalise on an impressive start to their campaign and their lack of forward options to support Olivier Giroud.

Jackson Martinez, Diego Costa and a whole host of other names have been thrown into the hat. And given his tendency to score and create in patches rather than on a consistent basis, one wondered if Rodrigo was the option to Wenger’s problems.

When Liverpool were later linked with the player, along with Atletico Madrid, there was a sense that interest was already being drummed-up in preparation for a summer sale. But now even more clubs have been linked with the Benfica forward – most notably Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Roma.

The United and Chelsea links in particular appear to have come out of nowhere, with the former not currently in need of another goal-getter and the Blues likely to buy big (with Edinson Cavani, Radamel Falcao and Hulk all regularly linked).

But Portuguese newspaper A Bola cites the Spanish press as the origin for the latest stories, leaving us to wonder if the player really is in such high demand, or if someone is looking to sell for the best possible price and is using the names of some of the biggest clubs in Europe to make things interesting.
