Why Chelsea can go all the way in the Champions League, just like in 2012

Chelsea Champions Of Europe

A superb second leg performance against PSG proved that the Blues shouldn't be scared of anyone.

The similarities between Chelsea's victorious Champions League campaign of 2012 and this season's run to the semi finals is striking.

Just like against Napoli in 2012, the Blues have turned around an unlikely deficit to march into the latter stages of the tournament.

It is a victory that, as it did two years ago, will give players, staff and fans a renewed belief that anything is possible and that crucially, this could be their year again.

However, it isn't just the similarities between the two Champions League campaigns that seems to favour Chelsea, it's the differences too.

This Chelsea side have the experience of winning the trophy firmly in their locker, something they can draw on in the next three matches that could lead them to glory once more.

And the fact that they do have just three matches to hurdle before lifting the trophy following their dramatic win over PSG, finding themselves already in the semi-finals of the tournament, rather than as they were after the Napoli games, at the quarter-final stage, it really is another step closer for John Terry and his teammates.

But perhaps the biggest thing going for Chelsea is that they, out of all the clubs in the quarter final stage, have come from behind to ride a wave of euphoria into the next round.

As they looked dead and buried, they emerged victorious, while the matches between Bayern Munich and Manchester United, and Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are poised at narrow score draws ahead of the second leg, all having shown a certain vulnerability that may shake their confidence. Real Madrid of course, scraped through against Borussia Dortmund in the night's other fixture, and will therefore likely be the most flat of the four semifinalists.

If Mourinho can reinforce to his players the significance of these omens, maybe they'll have the belief to carry the club to a spectacular second Champions League trophy in three seasons. Something that, with Jose at the helm, may just be even sweeter than their inaugural triumph.
