Transfer Bin: Manchester City to sign 20-year-old Chelsea star

Romelu Lukaku for Chelsea

Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, but we are putting that one straight in our transfer bin.

The summer transfer window may still be some way from re-opening, but that has not stopped a weekend full of speculation – some likely and some considerably less so.

One that falls firmly in the second category is the claim that Manchester City are lining up a move for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku to replace the outgoing Edin Dzeko.

The report originates from the Sun on Sunday, but in truth this one is on the way to our Transfer Bin to sit amidst the more fanciful rumours we have read in recent months.

Lukaku is enjoying another outstanding season, this time on loan at Everton having previously starred during a temporary spell at West Bromwich Albion. And while there will be no shortage of interested parties if he is sold by Chelsea this summer, the link to City makes little sense.

Even if Dzeko does leave the Etihad Stadium, that still leaves Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic, and Lukaku is unlikely to pick a club where competition for places is so high and money for replacements so readily available, given his experience to date at Stamford Bridge.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has already revealed how important it is for Lukaku to be enjoying his football – something he is clearly doing as the Toffees’ spearhead. And any move to City makes absolutely no sense at this stage of his career.

Whether at Everton or elsewhere, Lukaku will play where he can, well, play, regularly and to the devastating effect that he has shown for the last two seasons.

What do you think of the reports linking Lukaku with City?
