Liverpool have been simply sensational under the Northern Irishman this term and are on course to win their first ever Premier League title, their first league title in 24 years, if they win their remaining four games this term.
Rodgers has indeed worked wonders at Anfield this season taking the Reds from a disappointing 7th place finish in his debut season in charge to the Premier League summit in one season, his sophomoric year since arriving from Swansea.
The spine of the team will likely remain unchanged this summer – the core of key players in new goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, central defenders Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger as well as Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure means Sebastian Coates could potentially go out this summer but the fullback positions are definitely an area Rodgers will need to assess in the transfer window.
Loan signing Aly Cissokho hasn’t been all that reliable for the most part and Jose Enrique has been injured meaning young right-back Jon Flanagan has been covering on the wrong flank but has done exceptionally well this term regardless.
Glen Johnson has yet to extend his contract, which enters its final year this June, and he could potentially go but with Flanagan and Martin Kelly available, I’d suspect the left fullback position would be Rodgers’ priority in terms of the back line.
I think Cissokho will definitely go back to Valencia – I can’t see any way the Reds would take him on a permanent basis – and Enrique’s fitness struggles will likely see the boss bring in a quality and experienced left fullback in the kind of signing of Marcelo or perhaps a top youngster like Luke Shaw if he is looking at the future.
There have been a number of rumours of a supersized Real Madrid bid for Luis Suarez but I think there is no way on Earth the Reds will sell the Uruguayan after he has signed a new four-year deal – they hold all the cards and I very much doubt any offer would tempt them to sell. Fabio Borini will return from his loan spell at Sunderland and of course Daniel Sturridge is the second top scorer in the league but I would suspect to see last summer signing Iago Aspas go out perhaps and a player to come in and provide genuine cover up from, a player like Rodrigo would be ideal.
Victor Moses will likely not move on a permanent deal and will return to Chelsea and other than Raheem Sterling, the flanks are definitely an area Rodgers could look to add some quality. Xherdan Shaqiri has been perpetually linked and a player in that kind of mould would be the kind of signing I’d expect to come in at Anfied.
In central and attacking midfield, I think the Reds are all set – Steven Gerrard’s ability to play across the centre, whether as a holding player, a box-to-box midfielder and, of course, his old role as playmaker means that there is enough quality to cover potential injuries to Lucas Leiva, Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen. I would be surprised if a big signing came in to join the midfield options but stranger things have happened.
I think the priority has to be the back line – Liverpool have been so dominant in attack this term but they have leaked goals which has to be a concern heading into the Champions League again. There is no doubt the centre backs are all quality and experienced players but there needs to be more reliability from the fullbacks whomever comes in or goes out. Bolstering the defensive strength and depth of the side must surely be Brendan Rodgers’ priority this summer.
What do you think should be Rodgers' priority this summer?
