Manchester United have had a few 'wonder-kids' down the years; some that proved to be anything but when the hype was replaced by reality.
But others have gone on to exceed the loftiest of expectations, and the latest young player off the United production-line has the potential to follow in that illustrious company.
James Wilson is a striker of considerable talent, and one who – at just 18 – is already making waves behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
A goal-scorer of unerring quality, Wilson found his way onto the United bench for their recent match against Newcastle United, and while he did not make it on to the pitch, David Moyes has suggested it is only a matter of time.
In an interview with MUTV, the United boss said, “If the opportunity had been right at Newcastle, I’d have tried to get him some minutes on the pitch.
“As it was, we lost a coupler of people in the game to injury, so we had to make substitutions and we couldn’t get to a position to give him some minutes.
“I think he’s got a good chance, the boy, and we want to keep him right but keep moving him up and progressing him when we think the opportunities are there.
“If the opportunity comes (before the end of the season) we’ll do so, but we have a lot of people looking for a game.”
That may well be the case, but Wilson has showed at under-21 level that he deserves a chance to show what he can do in the first-team.
He may only be a teenager, but he has always played above his level and excelled regardless, meaning a stint in the illustrious company of Moyes’ first-string is unlikely to faze him.
Wilson is not just one to watch. He is one to be given a chance. And his manager will know that; so do not be surprised to see him on the pitch sooner rather than later.
