On this day: Chelsea in £18m talks, Rooney going nowhere and Arsenal eye Japan star

Andre Schurrle Chelsea vs AS Roma

On the 19th April 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 19th April 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 19th April 2013…

Pure Schurrle

Bayer Leverkusen admitted that Chelsea had made an approach for their forward Andre Schurrle.

The German international had been a target for The Blues for 18 months and it was already being heavily rumoured that they would be signing him in the summer.

And a Bayer spokesman told the BBC:

“Rudi Voller and Michael Reschke talked to Chelsea yesterday. No decisions have been made. We are talking, nothing more."

He did sign in the end of course - joining for a fee of £18 million in June 2013 - and he has gone on to have a solid first season for the club.

No way Roon-ay

Sir Alex Ferguson was playing down the prospect of Wayne Rooney leaving the club. It ewas being heavily reported this time last year that the relationship between the two had become untenable - and that Roo would be off in the summer - but Fergie stated:

"I don't think there is anything in that at all. But as for taking him off [against West Ham], he simply wasn't playing as well as the other players. In so many games, Wayne Rooney is better than most players, but Shinji Kagawa was playing well and he set up our second goal."

In the end Rooney was expected to leave - until Fergie announced his retirement.

Rooney now earns £300k-a-week at Old Trafford.

Bring him In-ui

Arsenal were being linked with a move for Japanese international Takashi Inui. He had been starring for Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga and Arsenal had reportedly sent chief scout Steve Rowley out to see him on a number of occasions.

However, Inui is still a Frankfurt player to this day.

Was Schurrle a good buy?
