Manchester United-linked Marek Hamsik ‘is absolutely not for sale’

Napoli Fans at night

Linked with a move to Manchester United just last week, Marek Hamsik has now been discussed by his current club president at Napoli.

Last week reports came out of Italy linking Manchester United with a move for Napoli play-maker Marek Hamsik.

The 26-year-old Slovakian international has not enjoyed the best of seasons in Italy, after a previous campaign that saw him score 11 goals and set up another 21. But still the report of United’s interest made little sense given the players already at their disposal.

The story claimed David Moyes was considering a €30million cash offer or a €15m deal with Shinji Kagawa used as a make-weight. But considering Hamsik occupies a similar position to the Japanese international, it seemed a less than believable story.

And now Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis has had his say in an interview with Radio Kiss Kiss that was later published by FourFourTwo.

“It’s only journalists who put him on the market,” he said. “Marek has to come and tell me if he wants to go. He has become Neapolitan and for me he is absolutely not for sale.

“Of course, if he came to me and asked to leave, then we’d have to discuss it.”

It seems the latest quotes have not so much put the story to bed as put the ball firmly in Hamsik’s court.

At 26, if he does want to move he may feel the time is right to do so. But to United?

With the likes of Kagawa, Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Adnan Januzaj already at Old Trafford, it seems unlikely Hamsik would join them, even if the former Borussia Dortmund player was thrown into – and agreed to – the deal.

Would Hamsik be an upgrade on Kagawa at United?
