Tottenham star 'ready to say yes to Roma' - report

Romelu Lukaku and Jan Vertonghen Belgium

Per the Italian press, Jan Vertonghen is edging closer to joining AS Roma.

Tottenham Hotspur’s season hasn’t gone to plan and the squad looks set for an overhaul this summer in an effort to regroup.

Tim Sherwood looks on his way out from the manager’s post as Spurs must decide how to proceed with a series of expensive flops and players who may have eyes on an exit.

Jan Vertonghen is one man that has constantly been linked with a departure from White Hart Lane of late, particularly with Rafa Benitez’s Napoli.

The main draw for the Belgian is understood to be Champions League football, which it’s all been confirmed Tottenham will miss out on once again.

But Napoli aren’t the only Serie A giants that will take part in Europe’s elite competition next term with eyes for the versatile centre-back.

AS Roma have been a revelation under Rudi Garcia this season, and having locked up second place in the Italian top flight are already exploring options to add further quality to the side.

Vertonghen has been linked with the Stadio Olimpico several times in recent months, and it seems as if the Giallorossi have moved to make their interest concrete.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb: “The player has given the maximum availability to the Giallorossi, as has his agent.”

And in turn, it’s been reported that Roma have already met with Vertonghen’s entourage twice at the Hotel Savoy in Florence to discuss a move.

Talks are understood by the Italian website to have been fruitful, with the defender primed to move on - if given Spurs’ blessing.

“Vertonghen is ready to say yes to Roma,” the report reads. “The ball now goes to Tottenham, who must decide whether to keep the player, or possibly deal with other clubs.”

Of course, based on TuttoMercatoWeb’s contention, Tottenham could refuse to deal in order to keep hold of one of the club’s top performers.

But if Vertonghen’s head has been turned and he’s inclined to leave for Champions League football, Spurs’ hand could be forced in the matter.

Vertonghen is valued at £19.5m by Transfermarkt and Tottenham surely won’t sell on the cheap - but may find themselves pressed into sanctioning a transfer for a player they’d rather keep.

Will Spurs be forced to sell Vertonghen to Roma?
