Tottenham star: We can't get worse; we gave up at times this season

Hugo Lloris

Hugo Lloris has offered a damning assessment of Spurs’ 2013-14 campaign and claims that the only way is up next term.

Tottenham need a minor miracle to avoid missing out on the Champions League once more, with the north London side ultimately having a disappointing campaign as a result.

Tim Sherwood’s men have suffered a number of heavy defeats against top four sides and as such are likely to finish in sixth or seventh place.

One man that has been consistently solid for Spurs this term has been goalkeeper Hugo Lloris – but the France international has spoken out about Tottenham’s below-par season.

The ex-Lyon stopper claims that things can only get better next term and that the side gave up at times.

“This season we had sometimes the feeling that we give up. We can’t allow this kind of behaviour. We have to show more character,” Lloris is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

“I want to be honest. I’m a competitor and I try always to do my best for the team. I want to see my team-mates do the same.

“It’s strange because we have a feeling that we can play at a very high level, but we can also play at a very bad level during the same game. It has put us in trouble a lot of times this season.

“All the players in the squad have the ambition to play in the Champions League - it’s the ambition of the club as well.

“But fourth place is finished.

“Last season we were so close. I think we had some regrets last season. But this season we have no regrets because we didn’t have the level to finish in the top four.”

Despite his scathing view of Tottenham’s season, Lloris has aimed to improve as a team ahead of next term.

“I hope we can do better next season. It will be difficult to do worse especially against the top four or five teams. I mean we conceded a lot of bad defeats,” he continued.

“This season we had a good start, but after the defeat against City away we lost a bit of confidence. After that we were in trouble, especially in the concentration. We conceded a lot of goals after individual mistakes and you know when you play against top teams it is too difficult to come back in the game.

“When you play a team at the bottom of the league or the second half of the table, you have a chance to come back.

“But we have to improve. We know that the top four, top five teams were better than us so we have to keep working and hope to be better. We have to learn about that and come back next season stronger and try to reach our ambition.”

The most frustrating thing for Tottenham fans this term has been the way the side has almost accepted heavy defeats against Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Lloris’ own future has been called into question of late, but his comments regarding next season at least indicate that he is not eyeing a move to another club.
