Manchester United are widely expected to shake up their squad this season after an underwhelming campaign, with a host of players leaving and a fair new faces to arrive.
However, the Old Trafford outfit has built a reputation of blooding young homegrown stars over the years.
The most promising of the young players at the outgoing Premier League champions currently are Jesse Lingard and Nick Powell.
On loan at Brighton and Wigan respectively, the pair are touted as having a bright future in the Premier League.
England under-21 boss Gareth Southgate has been singing the duo’s praises and fully expects them both to be in the running for a first-team place at Old Trafford once their loan spells finish.
"There’s Nick and Jesse Lingard from United, both of whom are out on loan, who I think in time could well make their way into the first team there," Southgate told The FA website.
"But they are young and I think they probably do need that league experience at the moment.
"I’ve seen him [Powell] a couple of times recently for Wigan. He missed a long period out injured just after Christmas, but he is a super talent, there’s no question about that.
"Nick had only played league football at Crewe so to go from there to Manchester United is a huge step – I think the spell on loan would have done him and his confidence the world of good.
"And after a good pre-season with United last summer, Jesse has had a good season too so they can be pleased going back to United for next season."
With the likes of Nani, Javier Hernandez and other under-performing fringe players at the club expected to be potentially sold in the summer, there may well be an opportunity for Lingard and Powell to be incorporated into the United first-team squad.
Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck are classic examples of young players starring elsewhere on loan and getting spot in the first team upon their return.
Will Powell and Lingard get their chance next season?
