Liverpool linked with swoop for Manchester United midfield target

Adam Lallana

After a successful season Liverpool are now looking to add to their squad ahead of next campaign, with Adam Lallana reportedly high on the club's list of priorities.

According to reports, Liverpool have edged ahead of Manchester United in the race to land Southampton ace Adam Lallana in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils £200 million rebuilding project looks set to be hijacked with Reds manager Brendan Rodgers keen to secure the highly-coveted Englishman’s signature.

After mounting an impressive title challenge with seemingly limited resources, Rodgers will be anxious to reinforce his side over the summer months. The midfield will be a key area of concern for the Reds and the Northern Irishman will do well to boost his club’s chances of further success with the addition of Lallana.

The 25-year-old has experienced a phenomenal season with current side Southampton – scoring nine goals in 36 Premier League appearances - and he is currently pushing hard for a place in Roy Hodgson’s starting line-up in Brazil.

Lallana has captained the Saints to a club-record top flight point total in only his side’s second season since promotion from the Championship. He starred yet again in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Everton, creating three key chances for his side.

With the prospect of Champions League football, the Saints captain could well be tempted with a move to Anfield. He will no doubt be eager to prove himself on the European stage at some point in his career and, with Rodgers at the helm, Liverpool could provide the perfect environment to continue his development.

However, his childhood support for Merseyside rivals Everton may prove a deciding factor. As a boyhood Toffees fan, just like his father, it would certainly require a substantial offer from the Reds to convince Lallana to conform his loyalties.
