Tomas Kalas makes himself fan favourite: Fun to win at Anfield!

Anfield Pitch

Chelsea youngster Tomas Kalas certainly knows how to make a good impression on the club's fans, claiming it was fun to win at Liverpool.

Tomas Kalas, a 20-year-old defender from Czech Republic, is well thought of at Stamford Bridge and has long been earmarked as a player with potential yet the once-capped international was thrust into the deep-end and into a sink or swim situation when he was tasked with containing the likes of Liverpool superstar Luis Suarez at Anfield earlier today, Sunday.

Despite there being no John Terry nor Gary Cahill, Kalas was still surrounded by experience. He had Branislav Ivanovic next to him, with Ashley Cole and Cesar Azpilicueta on the defensive flanks. Frank Lampard and Nemanja Matic, meanwhile, were only a matter of metres ahead.

For Kalas it was a learning curve, as he told Chelsea TV after the 2-0 victory over Liverpool that he "can now see" that he is able "to play for a full 90 minutes - I think I was ready!"

Kalas did suffer some hairy moments. He missed headers, he was also under pressure from Suarez who will no doubt have known that hounding a debutant could cause a forced error from the player, yet these moments could be attributed to nerves. In all, he was part of a stringent defence that kept a clean sheet against the Premier League's most prolific attacking team.

"I was playing all my life as a centre back but in last year as a right back. I don't know who thought about the right back but I feel myself in the centre."

When asked whether it was fun winning at Anfield, he smiled: "It is! [fun winning at Liverpool]."
