Manchester United have never really replaced legendary midfielder Paul Scholes. At the moment they have nobody with the passing proficiency and desire to get on the ball that Scholes provided.
But they have been linked with a player very much in the Paul Scholes mould.
It all started when David Moyes was spotted taking in a Bayern match in January - sitting alongside the German international’s agent.
When it emerged Kroos’ contract talks over an extension to the final 18 months of his current deal had reached a stalemate it seemed he might just be on the way.
Moyes may be gone - but the interest in his services remains - regardless of Bayern making it clear he will not be going anywhere until 2015 at the earliest.
Kroos was however a big player at Bayern Munich during Louis Van Gaal’s era and he is the favourite for the United job after Moyes’ dismissal.
So his signing really is still on the agenda.
And he truly is the passmaster.
This Tweet tells you that story…
.@ToniKroos: Has completed more passes (1078) than any other player in the CL this season; Xavi second having played 2 fewer games (1021)— WhoScored.com (@WhoScored) April 30, 2014
Kroos has completed more passes than any other player in the Champions League this season - and although second place Xavi has played two less games, it is still a very impressive record.
Compare his completed passes in the shorter Champions League to that of Manchester United's midfielders in the Premier League - and it really is quite shocking when you look at it.

Only Michael Carrick has made more passes in a vastly superior amount of playing time.
A player like Scholes comes along every once in a while - but Kroos has similar talents and skill sets to the great midfield maestro - and might be the only man capable of doing a similar job.
The evidence is there to see - should United make him their number one target?
Would you like to see Kroos at the club this summer?
