Mourinho changes his mind about 21-year-old after recent events - report

A report in Spain claims Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has changed his mind about Thibaut Courtois extending his Atletico Madrid loan deal.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was set to spend another season on loan at Atletico Madrid until Jose Mourinho changed his mind, according to a Spanish report.

Newspaper AS claims a deal was provisionally agreed that would see the Belgian goalkeeper spend a fourth straight season in the Spanish capital. But an injury to Petr Cech and Courtois’s impressive performance in the Champions League semi-final changed the Blues boss’s mind.

The report claims Mourinho does not want to start next season with Cech still recovering from his dislocated shoulder following likely surgery; before adding that the younger stopper’s performance over two legs against his parent club was simply too good to ignore.

Many Chelsea fans believe the time is right to give the 21-year-old a chance in the first-team, after he showed during his time in La Liga that he has the ability to be one of the world’s very best.

But if he does head back to Stamford Bridge this summer, it will be interesting to see if he continues as first-choice once his more experienced teammate is back in contention.

That said, a sparkling showing at this summer’s World Cup for Belgium could prove once and for all that Courtois deserves to be Chelsea’s number one, potentially drawing the curtain – at least in part – on Cech’s glorious time in London.

Is it time to give Courtois a chance at Chelsea?
