Arsenal legend on City's likely title win: Liverpool blew it!

Manchester City are heading toward a Premier League crown, something the Reds could have gotten their hands on, says Paul Merson.

"Liverpool blew it," said former Arsenal midfielder and two-time titlist Paul Merson, when looking ahead at the final round of Premier League match-ups this weekend, on Sunday.

Liverpool are at home to Newcastle United while Manchester City host West Ham United.

While City have the advantage, they must at least draw against the Hammers in order to guarantee their status as champions, providing the Reds win. Merson, though, predicts a 4-0 victory for Brendan Rodgers and a 2-0 triumph for City and believes the Liverpool capitulation is akin to how Newcastle United threw away a seemingly insurmountable margin at the top of the table in 1995-96.

"This is up there with when Newcastle blew it," he said, before claiming that the club's undoing was their naivety at the back, focusing too much on attack, which led to a porous defence.

"I don't think you win the league playing attacking football all the time; you have to swallow a pill sometimes and do something different. They needed to draw with a Chelsea team that was playing defensive, so why not play defensively yourself and go from there?

"A draw would have been fine for them - and then a win over Palace would have pretty much won them the league. They have to score two goals quickly on Sunday to put on the pressure and with the reins off they can go out and play their stuff. I think they will remember their mistakes for a long time, though..."
