Paris Saint-Germain suffered heartbreak last month when they conceded a late goal against Chelsea that dumped them out of the Champions League.
Laurent Blanc’s side won the first leg of their quarter-final tie 3-1 at Parc des Princes and were favourites to progress through to the last four.
However, the Blues staged a sensational comeback and won the second leg 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to go through on away goals rule. Demba Ba’s strike from inside the penalty box on 87 minutes saw PSG get knocked out of the last eight of Europe’s premier club competition for the second season in a row.
The French giants were supposed to make a statement of intent this campaign by going as far as the semi-finals of the Champions League at least. Despite assembling an expensive squad that includes Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi among others, the Ligue 1 champions once again failed in Europe.
It is this failure that hurts PSG defender Thiago Silva the most. The Parisian outfit wrapped up the Ligue 1 title with ease, but being knocked out of the Champions League has left the Brazil international with a bitter taste in his mouth.
‘Our elimination from the Champions League,’ he told Le Parisien when asked his worst moment of the season. ‘It was our dream (to win the competition) and it will continue to be so’.
Chelsea also had a dream to win the Champions League this season, and they too saw it crushed. Jose Mourinho’s side lost the semi-final tie against Atletico Madrid 3-1 on aggregate and will have to wait for one more year at least to reclaim the trophy they won back in 2012.
Is Thiago Silva the best centre-back in the world?
