Liverpool best team in England, says manager

Liverpool Wall

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew believes that Liverpool have been the best team in the Premier League this season.

Liverpool are likely to finish second in the Premier League this season, but that has not stopped Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew from claiming that the Merseyside outfit have been the best team this campaign.

The Reds are currently second in the league table with 81 points from 37 matches, two points behind leaders Manchester City. For Liverpool to win the title, they have to beat Newcastle at Anfield on Sunday and hope that West Ham United pick up all three points at the Etihad Stadium.

The odds are very much against Liverpool, who until the latter part of last month were in control of their own destiny. However, a 2-0 home defeat to Chelsea and a heartbreaking 3-3 away draw with Crystal Palace have pushed Brendan Rodgers’ side to second place.

Nevertheless, the 2013-14 season has been a huge success for Liverpool. At the start of the campaign, they were one of the challengers for a top-four place; now, they can still actually win the title. Rodgers has been hailed by everyone in the footballing community, and Newcastle boss Pardew has joined in signing the praise of Liverpool.

‘They have been brilliant’, ITV Sport quotes him as saying. ‘They have been the team of the season, probably, regardless of whether they win it or not’.

It might be a bit harsh on Manchester City to claim that Liverpool have been the team of the season. Remember, this is manager Manuel Pellegrini’s first year in English football and despite the ups and downs that his side have suffered and the injuries they have picked up, heading into the final day of the season, they are actually on top of the table.

Moreover, City have played arguably the best football in the whole of England and have scored no fewer than 100 goals. Under Pellegrini, Yaya Toure has become a real force while marching forward from midfield, while Edin Dzeko has looked very fresh.

Yet, one cannot ignore how much Liverpool have progressed under Rodgers this term. Last season they finished as low as seventh and now they are on the brink of winning the title. That is something that cannot be undermined.
