Chelsea’s reported demands for centre-back David Luiz have been branded as ‘outrageous’ in Spain.
The Brazilian defender is being linked with a summer exit and two La Liga sides are thought to be interested in him; Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.
In the case of Atletico, it’s been reported that Luiz could be used in part exchange for Diego Costa while other reports have suggested that he’s already agreed terms with Barcelona over a move.
Chelsea are well within their rights to demand top money for Luiz and that’s exactly what they’ve done with an apparent £32 million asking price, which hasn’t settled well in the Catalan part of the media.
“This is an outrageous price!” writes Sport discussing the connection between the player, Barcelona and Chelsea’s desire to get a deal for Diego Costa done and dusted.
Luiz didn’t make as many Chelsea appearances as he would have liked last season, but he still proved that he had a lot of value to Mourinho.
Not only does he have cast iron experience of playing as a central defender, he also has the ability to play further forward in a holding role in front of the back four.
Barca tried to get him last summer in a £15 million deal which was rightly knocked back by the West London side.
Thomas Kalas’ progression and the investment made in Kurt Zouma last winter means Mourinho has defensive options, but the current price demands suggest he’s gone up in value in the eyes of the club and their Portuguese coach.
As for the idea of a swap deal, it’s very difficult to see happening.
Costa is one of Atletico’s main attacking weapons so there isn’t much sense in swapping him for a completely different player when none of Atletico’s key defenders are pushing for a move away from the club.
Don’t expect Chelsea to lower their price demands any time soon.
