Arsene Wenger reportedly wants two transfers sewn up before the start of the World Cup.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger reportedly wants two deals in place and ready to become official before the World Cup starts this summer.
Goal has reported that one of those deals is likely to be the transfer of versatile right sided defender Serge Aurier from Toulouse, with the Gunners having apparently opened up talks to sign the 21-year-old.
The second deal in question is unknown but it could potentially be the centre forward Arsenal fans have been crying out for over the course of the past season, as Mesut Ozil has been crying out for some pace in the channels of Arsenal’s attack.
“Wenger wants deals in place for two new players before the World Cup, even if the formalities are not completed until after the event,” reads Goal’s report.
It should be encouraging for Arsenal fans to see Wenger taking a proactive approach to transfers this summer.
He recently said that in his experience, transfers don’t happen quickly in a World Cup year but he seems determined to make sure that Arsenal don’t miss out on two of their first choice targets.
In the case of Aurier, the club have been left with no choice considering the decision of Bacary Sagna to constantly stall over a new contract throughout last season.
The problem with waiting until after a World Cup to do business is that if Arsenal’s main targets play well in Brazil, their market value instantly goes through the roof and they become more valuable.
It’s difficult to gauge who the second player may be because Arsenal have been linked with so many talented attacking midfielders and strikers.
The Gunners are fortunate to be sitting on a large pot of cash but the second deal in question may not gather pace until after the FA Cup final against Hull City this weekend.
Wenger’s focus will be completely on that game, with the difference between the Aurier talks and opening talks for another player being he’s likely to have known that he’ll need a new right-back for the last few weeks.
It will be exciting and fascinating to see who else the Frenchman has his eye on.
Are you happy with Aurier? Who should be the second player Wenger goes after?
