Arsenal stars gearing up for season finale

Mesut Ozil and Kieran Gibbs are determined to win the FA Cup final against Hull City.

Arsenal are on the verge of ending their nine-year trophy drought and the players cannot wait for it.

Later on Saturday, the Gunners will contest the final of the FA Cup against fellow Premier League club Hull City. Arsene Wenger’s side will head into the contest at London’s Wembley Stadium as favourites to win one of the most prestigious competitions in the world.

Last time Arsenal won any major silverware was back in 2005 when, incidentally, they clinched the FA Cup. Since then, they have reached the final of the League Cup twice and the Champions League once, but on all three occasions they have failed to go the extra mile.

This time the players are determined to finally taste some trophy success and give their fans something to cheer about. Mesut Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid only last summer, but even he understands how frustrating it can be for the supporters to go almost a decade without winning anything.

‘We want to take this silverware’, The Mirror quotes the Germany international as saying. ‘I am convinced we will achieve that... This is important for fans as well. They have waited so long’.

Kieran Gibbs has been at Arsenal a bit longer than Ozil, and he too acknowledges how crucial it is for them to defeat Hull on Saturday.

The 24-year-old England international left-back, who has been with the Gunners his entire career, has seen his progress hampered in recent years by injuries.

However, this season Gibbs has been more regular, featuring in 28 Premier League matches, six Champions League games and as many FA Cup fixtures. He is now keen on rounding off the 2013-14 campaign with victory over the Tigers.

‘We know we have the quality to win the game’, he said. ‘It is massive, we take all competitions seriously and at the end of your career you want to look on what you have won. This is a chance to look back on what has been a good season and say we managed to win the FA Cup’.

The focus is understandably on Arsenal and they will be favourites to win the FA Cup final. But spare a thought for Hull. The Yorkshire club have not won anything major for 110 years and having survived in the Premier League for one more season at least, Steve Bruce’s side will now be determined to lift the FA Cup. After all, they will be the underdogs and that will not only take pressure off them, but it will also give them added motivation.
