Should Liverpool put their trust in teenager instead of signing this winger?

Jordon Ibe

They have been heavily linked with the Ukrainian, but maybe they should put their trust in a youngster?

Liverpool are still being linked with a move for Ukrainian winger Yevhen Konoplyanka, though the latest report in the Daily Mirror today suggests they will face stiff competition from fierce rivals Manchester United for the signature of the player.

The Reds came very close to signing the winger from Dnipro in January, but they did pretty well without the winger. The question is, do Liverpool really need to splash the cash on Konoplyanka next season?

Raheem Sterling has proven himself on the wing, and at the age of 19 he is only going to get better. Jordon Ibe has been in and around the first team, as well as spending much of the second half of last season on loan in the championship with Birmingham City.

Konoplyanka may have provided Liverpool with another option off the bench if he had joined the club in January, but if Ibe continues developing and maturing into a fairly versatile player then that could be the extra option that Brendan Rodgers needs from next season onwards as well as pushing for a starting place. It was something that was missed in the second half of the season – not having enough quality from the substitutes to change things.

Some will say that Konoplyanka isn’t the kind of player that Liverpool should be going for with a greater need to address issues in a defence that conceded 50 goals in the Premier League last season – but quality will needed to be added in all areas.

If they don’t try and pursue Konoplyanka again, or any other wide option, it would put a tremendous amount of pressure on the shoulders of Ibe, but also a lot of faith.

He’s got a lot of pace which is hard not to notice whilst his final ball and decisions making seems to have developed. Though he is not the finished article, and nor is Raheem Sterling, perhaps it would be better to put his trust in the 18-year-old this season and try and spend the transfer budget on other areas that are more in need of strengthening.

Would you like to see Ibe given a chance instead of Konoplyanka?
