Quincy Promes linked with Manchester United; a more realistic option

FC Twente

Manchester United have been linked with Holland international Quincy Promes, a player they are far more likely to get than the big-money Bayern stars.

Manchester United are reportedly interested in FC Twente winger Quincy Promes.

The 22-year-old Dutch winger has been included in Louis van Gaal’s Holland squad for this summer’s World Cup. And now Portuguese newspaper A Bola has picked up on claims from the Turkish press that United are monitoring the player.

If that all sounds a bit convoluted that may be because it is; and yet the reports emanate from Turkey because Galatasaray have long been linked with Promes, while the Portuguese press have since got excited because FC Porto are also believed to be keen on the player.

A Bola claims that Porto, United and Galatasaray will be joined by Napoli in the race to sign the player after this summer’s World Cup; a competition which is tipped to significantly inflate Promes’s price-tag.

Given that van Gaal has picked the player to represent his country this summer, it would be no surprise if he is interested in bringing him to Old Trafford. The same can be said for another young Dutch star, Jordy Clasie.

And in truth it is these kind of players that United are far more likely to sign than the big-name solutions who are seemingly ruling themselves out of a move almost as soon as it is mentioned.

First there was Thomas Muller, then Toni Kroos and now Arjen Robben. And with the Cesc Fabregas stories likely to replicate those of last summer, United fans may have to temper their expectations.

Young, accessible stars may be the order of the day; which is no bad thing if you buy right. While Kevin Strootman has reportedly ruled out a move from Roma, a viable alternative would be Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho.

Similarly United could move for Promes in place of Muller and Clasie instead of Kroos.

It is all hypothetical at this stage, but van Gaal’s arrival does not automatically mean the great and the good of the game will follow him to Old Trafford. That is why the links to players like Promes make sense.

The right-winger can also play as an attacking midfielder and he made 31 appearances for Twente this season, scoring 11 goals and providing eight assists in the process.
