David Luiz’s emotional Facebook message to Chelsea

David Luiz

David Luiz says that he is sad to leave Chelsea, but is looking forward to a “new challenge” at Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea defender David Luiz has bid farewell to everyone associated with the club.

On Friday, it was announced that Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea have struck a deal for the Brazil international to leave the Blues and join the Ligue 1 champions. The transfer fee is reported to be €50 million (£40m), and it will become official once the defender agrees personal terms and has passed a medical.

It now appears that the 27-year-old is happy with the offer that PSG have made him and is looking forward to playing for the French giants. However, in an emotional message on his Facebook page, he made it clear that he is sad to leave Stamford Bridge and enjoyed his three-and-a-half years in London, but is relishing the prospect of playing for PSG.

Luiz had a mixed time in England. Signed from Benfica in January 2011 for just over £21m, the Brazilian often made howlers. His gung-ho playing style once saw him described by former Manchester United defender and current Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville as if he was "being controlled by a 10-year-old in the crowd on a PlayStation".

However, Luiz proved to be important in Chelsea winning the FA Cup and the Champions League in 2012, and the Europa League in 2013. This season he showed his versatility by playing in defensive midfield instead of in central defence. Moreover, Luiz is also part of the 23-man Brazil squad for his summer’s World Cup finals.

Luis was a flamboyant figure in the Premier League and he will be missed.
