Rio Ferdinand's 'Rocky'-style lauding of game winner Gareth Bale

Former Manchester United rock talks up ex Tottenham Hotspur hero as the Welshman saves day for Real Madrid in Champions League final.

One of the most famous lines in boxing, so frequently used and passed down from generation to generation that it is effectively as immortal as the film where it originated, reads: "It's not about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward."

For former Manchester United centre back Rio Ferdinand, 35 and currently a free agent, the player may as well have been reading from Sylvester Stallone's Rocky script when live-Tweeting his reaction to Gareth Bale's effective winner for Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Los Blancos went 1-0 down after 36 minutes, when Diego Godin secured a lead for underdogs Atletico Madrid, a team who looked destined to etch their name onto the iconic trophy as they maintained their lead all the way to the last minute, but conceded a 93rd minute Sergio Ramos header.

Welshman Bale, who had missed gilt-edged chances earlier on in the game, twisted the knife in the 110th minute, prompting Ferdinand to comment: "He's just repaid his transfer fee there. All the people hammering Bale for a missed chance - it's how you react!"

Bale's reaction is the stuff of legends, as he helped Real on their way to La Decima, the club's tenth success in the competition.

Yet the goal-scoring was not even over, as Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo added insult to injury, beating their local rivals by a 4-1 score.
