Where would £25m ex-Arsenal star fit in under Mourinho at Chelsea?

Cesc Fabregas Barcelona

Chelsea have been linked with a £25m swoop to sign Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, but where would he fit in at Stamford Bridge?

The Blues ended Jose Mourinho's return season without a trophy, as Chelsea fell short in both the Premier League and the Champions League. Regardless, Blues fans can be optimistic about the future under Mourinho, with a summer of squad improvement on the horizon.

Adding more attacking firepower will be at the forefront of Mourinho's plans, as will finding a left back to replace Ashley Cole in defence, but adding a partner for Nemanja Matic in the heart of the Chelsea midfield should also be a priority this summer.

As a result, Chelsea have today been linked with a big money swoop for former Arsenal captain Fabregas. The 27-year-old is widely expected to leave Barcelona this summer after a difficult season, and the midfielder has generally failed to live up to expectations since his 2011 switch to the Camp Nou.

Barcelona will rebuild their squad this summer under new boss Luis Enrique and Fabregas looks like being one of the players to leave the club as part of those rebuilding plans, but if he does move to Chelsea, where exactly would he fit in under Mourinho?

Fabregas is at his best when played further forward in midfield, but with the likes of Willian, Oscar, Eden Hazard, Andre Schurrle and Mohamed Salah all vying for places behind the striker, it seems nonsensical to add Fabregas into the mix for such a huge amount of money.

There is always the possibility of using Fabregas in a more reserved role alongside Matic in front of the back four, and with the Serbian able to sit in front of the defence and break up play, it would free up the Spaniard to join in the attack and contribute goals from midfield - just as Frank Lampard has for many years.

A talented midfielder, Fabregas would bring a more technical approach to the Chelsea line-up - but Mourinho must have a clear role for the former Arsenal star for this move to be worthwhile.
