Have Spurs taken pole position in the race for Adam Lallana?

New Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino could be set to hijack Liverpool's bid for Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana.

Mauricio Pochettino’s appointment as the new Tottenham Hotspur manager could lead to a flurry of activity in this summer’s transfer window.

The 42-year-old becomes the club’s third boss in as little as two years, replacing Tim Sherwood who was sacked earlier this month. On arrival he will be expected to get more out of a squad who were revamped dramatically last summer while also bringing in a few signings of his own.

The Guardian have reported that the Argentine manager’s first target is likely to be Saints’ captain Adam Lallana; a claim that could strike fear into the hearts of Liverpool fans, whose club have been heavily linked with the England international.

Pochettino is credited with helping Lallana secure a World Cup place after a successful season at St. Mary’s and, for this reason, the 26-year-old could remain loyal to his former coach. The Argentine’s influence will be a significant factor in any decision he ultimately makes.

Of course, the one stumbling block in any potential deal will be the prospect of Champions League football. After finishing sixth this season, Spurs have qualified for the Europa League, but the attraction of elite European participation at Liverpool could be too difficult to resist.

England manager Roy Hodgson has warned his World Cup squad to sort out their club futures before the tournament and Pochettino is believed to be after a quick deal. Southampton are demanding a fee of around £20 million for Lallana’s services, a price Daniel Levy will surely be willing to pay.
