Transfer Bin: Liverpool linked with Fabregas swoop

Cesc Fabregas Barcelona

Liverpool have been linked with a sensational move for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

National newspaper the Daily Mail features in the latest version of HITC’s transfer bin, with a claim that Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas could be on his way to Anfield this summer.

The Spanish midfielder has been publicly linked with a return to the Premier League, but there are a few problems with Liverpool’s reported interested which make a deal for the 27-year-old unlikely.

The first and most obvious, is the first refusal clause that Arsenal have in his current Barcelona contract.

Fabregas has always maintained a tremendous relationship with his former club and former boss Arsene Wenger, which suggests if he does return to England, it will most likely be with the North Londoners.

If Arsenal aren’t interested in exercising that clause, Manchester United will come into the equation.

United are one of the few sides that could blow Liverpool out of the water financially, which is amazing considering they don’t have Champions League football to fall back on next season.

Fabregas would reportedly cost around the £30-35 million price range, which represents a significant chunk of the reported budget Brendan Rodgers has to improve his squad this summer.

The financial implications of a deal would stretch further than a fee, because Fabregas would require a hefty pay package at Liverpool, which would place pressure on the socialist wage structure which currently exists at the club.

It’s arguable that a more pressing need for Liverpool is signing a left sided midfielder, which would release Philippe Coutinho to consolidate in the number ten role and Daniel Sturridge to focus on nothing more than scoring goals.

Fabregas’ arrival at Anfield would more than likely be to play at the top of the midfield but Rodgers already has two perfectly good options in Coutinho and captain Steven Gerrard when it comes to that position.

Rubbish Rating: While it’s extremely positive for Liverpool to be linked with players of Fabregas’ quality, the difficulties generated for the club to sign the Spaniard would probably be too great for Rodgers to overcome.

Do you think Liverpool could pull off a deal for Fabregas?
