Atletico spark rumours, agree to sign replacement for Chelsea-linked star

Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid have sparked rumours of Filipe Luis' exit by agreeing to sign Granada left back Guilherme Siqueira this summer.

Atletico enjoyed a fairytale season under Diego Simeone, clinching their first La Liga title since 1996, as well as reaching the Champions League final, only to be beaten 4-1 by local neighbours Real Madrid. Whilst their fans will have been hoping that their players would stick together, it seems the vultures are already circling on a club who have frequently sold their best players.

Diego Godin, Koke, Arda Turan and Diego Costa have all been linked with moves away from the Estadio Vicente Calderon, but this week it was speculated that left back Filipe Luis would be leaving the club, as Chelsea lined up the Brazilian to replace the outgoing Ashley Cole at Stamford Bridge.

The former Deportivo La Coruna man has established himself as one of the top left backs in European football after a number of consistently excellent seasons in the Spanish capital, and it's no surprise to see other clubs linked with moves to take him away from Atletico.

The rumour will now only grow in popularity after it was tonight revealed that Atletico have agreed a €10m fee with La Liga rivals Granada for the signature of their fellow Brazilian left back Guilherme Siqueira. The 28-year-old has spend the past season on loan at Portuguese side Benfica, after his impressive displays for Granada had attracted plenty of interest a year ago.

It seems that Atletico are now resigned to losing Luis, especially with former Liverpool man Emiliano Insua also in the squad. Carrying three left backs would be a bizarre choice from Simeone, and it suggests that one of Luis or Insua is set for the exit - and given that Siqueira will expect first-team football and there is unlikely to be a clamouring for Insua, it seems Chelsea could be closing in on Cole's replacement.
