Why Pochettino's idea to build around Adebayor is his first masterplan

Emmanuel Adebayor

Ahead of meeting his Tottenham players, Spurs' new boss has already played his first piece of smart man management.

Emmanuel Adebayor is a notoriously sensitive football player, capable of performances up there with the very best when he feels loved at a club. But on more than one occasion, the Togolese striker has lost the favour of a manager, and gone on to be an expensive, and hastily ejected burden.

So it looked at Tottenham last year, when Andre Villas-Boas refused to select him despite the team struggling to find the net. The decision was an ill-fated one, with Villas-Boas losing his job in December, and Tim Sherwood coming in and putting his arm round Adebayor. The result was the striker finishing just one goal behind Premier League top scorer Luis Suarez in terms of goals scored from the date of his return to the end of the Premier League season. No one that watched his performances since January can doubt the work rate and ability the Togo international displayed.

New spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has this week been rumoured to want to build his Spurs side around the enigmatic former Arsenal and Manchester City striker, an excellent piece of news to escape to the media and the ears of the surely holidaying forward.

Adebayor will now look forward to a return to Spurs in July, buoyed by the knowledge that his new boss has faith in him. That kind of news is the difference between Tottenham having one of the best forwards in the league and having one of the most difficult.

It leaves plenty of scope for the Argentine to come into Spurs and grab the ear of Roberto Soldado to begin developing the Spaniard's confidence in time for next season. With Soldado struggling with English more than the former Saints boss, his new boss will be able to build a trusting, personal relationship with the Spanish international. That is if Pochettino is even planning for life with the former Valencia forward, who has been linked with switches to Italy and Spain.

Either way, it is just the beginning of the Argentine's media savvy approach benefiting Tottenham.

Would Pochettino be right to build his team around Adebayor?
